FEBRUARY 23, 2020 IF YOU AREN’T WORRYING, YOU SHOULD BE!!!

Matthew 6: 25 – 26 “Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or your body, about what you will wear.Is not life more than food and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?“

WORRY!!! We all do it! In fact, some of us are such professional worry warts that we can’t understand why everybody else isn’t as worried as we are! Obviously, if these people just understood their situations better, they would really worry! We worry about money, we worry about our families, we worry about our jobs, we worry about our possessions. We worry about all the mistakes we have already made and then we worry because we are afraid we will make the same mistakes or worse ones tomorrow!

Here in Ghana we have a major problem with drivers of vehicles of all kinds. When any vehicle has a rear view mirror on it, be it a motorcycle, a car, a pickup, or a large lorry, it is more than likely that the driver will NOT aim the mirror so that he/she can see what lies behind but instead will aim the mirrror so that he/she can admire himself/herself! No wonder we have so many road traffic accidents!

You might chuckle at the idea of a driver not using a rear view mirror properly, but most of us are just as foolish. We just keep focusing on ourselves and our problems, no matter what else there is to consider. Jesus knew this; after all, human nature doesn’t change. Now Jesus was NOT advising his hearers to stop working or stop caring for their families. But Jesus did want his hearers to look at things from an eternal point of view and to realize how little control they actually had over their situations. First, foremost, and always, Jesus was trying to point people to their heavenly Father, Who had given them life. Jesus wanted his hearers to look to God first and to give God their problems, trusting that He had a perfect solution. Only after they had given God their problems, were they to go to work, care for their families, and carry out their other daily activities.

What does worry actually accomplish? Well, when you worry, all your blood vessels tighten up, particularly the blood vessels to your heart, your brain, and your kidneys. Your stomach produces excess acid. You feel exhausted, even when you are only part – way through your day. And you lose hope as you realize how little control you actually have over your situation. So worry does lots of damage to your body without solving a single problem.

Today, why don’t you talk to your heavenly Father and tell Him all the things that bother you. He can solve your problems far better than you can; after all, He’s been doing it for thousands of years.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you that you love us and care for us far more than we can ever care for ourselves! Today we lift up our problems to you. (Give time here to list your problems, even if you feel silly doing so.) Please take full control of these problems and help me to remember that I have given them over to you so that I don’t try to take them back. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
