JUNE 11, 2020 IN WHAT SPIRIT ARE YOU ACTING?

June 11, 2020

In the last few days, many of us have observed the destruction of communities with horror. Innocent people whose only crime was living in a particular area have lost homes and businesses and livelihoods. Emergency workers and security workers who have dedicated their lives to helping people have been assaulted and injured or killed, leaving their families to grieve and wonder if their sacrifices were worth it. Evil spirits are hovering over our land, seeking anyone whom they can use.

1 John 2:9 ”If anyone claims to be in the light but hates his brother, he is still in the darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no cause of stumbling in him. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.”

There is no doubt that many social injustices have been perpetrated. But one of the ironies of the current situation is that governing bodies such as city councils who could have addressed these injustices long ago are now attempting to blame anyone else they can as a means of distracting public attention from themselves. Politicians who have tolerated situations for years are now attempting to make political capital out of them.

One of the foundational aspects of social injustice is the willingness of different groups to judge others, demonizing groups while assuming that their personal motives are pure and without bias. Quite honestly, there is nobody on this planet who does not cherish a particular set of beliefs and who is not convinced that their beliefs are worthy, even as they severely castigate others. Racial distinctions, financial distinctions, even distinctions within particular ethnic groups, distinctions on the basis of profession or educational level – these are only a few of the myriad of ways in which we judge others and justify ourselves.

Name – calling and insults serve no useful purpose whatsoever and only result in further divisions. There is an old saying that when you point one finger at someone else, you have several fingers pointing back at yourself.

Healing begins with humility. Unless and until you are willing to accept the fact that you as a human being can make mistakes, you will never bother to listen to anyone else. “My mind’s made up; don’t confuse me with the facts.”

Make no mistake! Evil spirits are real and they are currently motivating those who are destroying our cities. The struggle continues between the darkness and the light. Anytime you choose to support those who are destroying homes and businesses and making communities war zones, you are choosing the darkness.

The apostle John goes on to say this: ”And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us.” 1 John 1:5-10

Today, you must choose. Will you choose humility and healing, or will you choose to accuse and denounce and destroy?

PRAYER: Father God, let everyone who reads this come under the convicting power of the Holy Spirit and let this meditation have Your effect. In the mighty and precious Name of King Jesus. Amen.

SELF – PITY: LOTS OF EFFORT, BUT ONLY DIGS A DEEPER HOLE!

June 10, 2020

Psalm 73:13 – 14 “Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure; in innocence I have washed my hands. For I am afflicted all day long and punished every morning.”

The man who wrote this psalm was thoroughly and completely disgusted and fed up! He had tried to live a righteous life, but what had that gotten him? Not much! Meanwhile, his neighbor, perhaps a crooked businessman, was living in luxury. The psalmist was disgusted and wanted to make sure God knew about it!

When I was growing up on the farm, we had to change the position of fences on a regular basis. To help set the fence posts, we had a type of auger mounted on the back of the tractor. After positioning the auger, we would engage the power take – off and the auger would drill a nice deep hole. There was only one problem with that auger: it only worked in one direction. The longer the power take – off was engaged, the deeper the hole would get. Self pity is a lot like that.

Oswald Chambers speaks about self pity in “My Utmost for His Highest” in the November 10th selection. Chambers says, “I must learn that the purpose of my life belongs to God, not me. God is using me from His great personal perspective, and all He asks of me is that I trust Him. I should never say, “Lord, this causes me such heartache.” To talk that way makes me a stumbling block. When I stop telling God what I want, He can freely work His will in me without any hindrance. He can crush me, exalt me, or do anything else He chooses. He simply asks me to have absolute faith in Him and His goodness. Self-pity is of the devil, and if I wallow in it I cannot be used by God for His purpose in the world. Doing this creates for me my own cozy “world within the world,” and God will not be allowed to move me from it because of my fear of being “frost-bitten.”

How do you combat injustice? Injustice must be opposed in humility, recognizing that many times your personal prejudices might appear quite unjust to someone else. Humility allows you to sit and listen, rather than jumping to conclusions that you have all the answers for a particular situation. But one thing that does NOT help combat injustice is encouraging the victims of that injustice to wallow in self – pity. You cannot empower people and foster self – pity at the same time. Self pity is like leukemia. Leukemia moves into your very bones and either manufactures abnormal cells or causes the bone marrow to stop producing cells at all. Self pity takes away initiative, saps energy, and focuses one’s attention in the wrong direction. Just like that mounted auger, self – pity will keep digging deeper and deeper holes, until it’s almost impossible to see out! Yes, Chambers is right! Self – pity is of the devil !

Prayer: Father God, this morning we confess that we have wallowed in self – pity so many times and have also encouraged others to do the same. Lord, deliver us from ourselves! Help us to climb out of the holes we have created and to go forward into the future you have for us. Let us be used by you for your purposes. In the mighty and precious Name of Jesus. Amen.

JUNE 9, 2020 HOW’S YOUR ANGER METER?

June 9, 2020

Proverbs 22:24 – 25 “Do not make friends with an angry man, and do not associate with a hot-tempered man, or you may learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.”

Throughout America, there are concerned people of all ages who want to see social change and justice for those who have suffered racial discrimination. These goals are admirable. But will violence achieve these goals? No.

Violence begets violence and hatred begets hatred. Self – pity is a deadly temptation because the longer you think about how badly someone has mistreated you, the angrier you become and the more likely you are to become violent. Associate with violent people and you too will become violent.

America needs healing, but it will never come at gunpoint. The communities that have successfully avoided destruction and looting have been those where people came together peacefully and shared meals together and prayed together.

Today, each of us has a choice: will we become bitter or better? Proverbs 4:23 says, “Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.”

When we choose hatred, violence, resentment, and name – calling, we are choosing death. When we choose to listen, to help, to bless and to forgive, we are choosing life. Today, which will you choose?

PRAYER: Father God, help each one of us to listen to your voice and to choose peace, to choose forgiveness, and to choose reconciliation. In the mighty and precious Name of King Jesus. Amen.

JUNE 8, 2020 WHEN THE EARTH SHAKES, WHAT DO YOU DO?

June 8, 2020

Psalm 46: 1-3 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth is transformed and the mountains are toppled into the depths of the seas, though their waters roar and foam and the mountains quake in the surge.

Today many of us are appalled at the wanton destruction being inflicted on our communities. We pray for peace and wonder how peace can possibly come. The answer is to trust God.

In the last few months, many of the things we thought were so permanent have disappeared. But God has not gone away. God is still with us, and God is still on the throne.

People have free will; otherwise, we would be only puppets. God in his infinite mercy and grace has allowed us to make our own choices, even when they were poor ones. The interesting thing about some of the protests is that some groups appear to be trying to control others so that they have no chance to choose. This behavior is not godly; God does not force Himself upon people.

The point is this: no matter what is happening and no matter how much upheaval we are facing, God is still our refuge and strength. Today, do not give in to despair. Trust God and pray for Him to bring His Light and His Truth into all of the confusion that has gripped our world. He will do it. And if we ask for God to send His Peace, He will send that also.

Psalm 46: 4-11 “There is a river whose streams delight the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.

God is within her; she will not be moved. God will help her when morning dawns.

Nations rage, kingdoms crumble; the earth melts when He lifts His voice.

The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Selah (Pause and calmly think on that.)

Come, see the works of the LORD, who brings devastation upon the earth.

He makes wars to cease throughout the earth; He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;

He burns the shieldsb in the fire.

“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted over the earth.”

The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

SELAH! (Pause and calmly think on that! )

Father God, bring your peace to our hearts and help us to trust you completely. In the mighty Name of Jesus. Amen.

JUNE 7, 2020 WHERE IS YOUR SOURCE OF HELP?

June 7, 2020

Psalm 121: I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?

2My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

3He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber.

4Behold, the Protector of Israel will not slumber or sleep.

5The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade on your right hand.

6The sun will not strike you by day nor the moon by night.

7The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul.

8The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.

These days many people are appalled by what they see on social media. Images of looting, burning, murder, and destruction leave most of us in despair. We must continue to pray earnestly for healing in our nation! But, amid these images of horror, there are other images as well. There are prayer meetings. Groups are moving in to clean up neighborhoods and to help in other ways. In Minneapolis, many have donated groceries to people in areas affected by rioting. God is still moving and still using people to reach out in love and compassion.

A burning question in the midst of this chaos is this: what forms the foundation of your life? In what are you trusting for security? In the last few months, many people have lost businesses. Many have struggled with health problems. Many have seen their incomes drop precipitously. And many have lost possessions. Jobs, health, savings, houses, vehicles – any or all of these things can disappear in an instant.

In the days when this psalm was written, many pagans sited places of worship on the tops of hills or mountains. When the psalmist asks “From where does my help come?” he is implying that these high places of idol worship are worthless. Instead, the psalmist firmly states that his help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. God is eternal; He always was and always will be. God knows us better than we know ourselves, and He knows those things that we need. God also knows how to protect us better than we can protect ourselves.

Psalm 46:1 says “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.” Today we can take comfort in this fact and call upon God to help guide us through these troubled times. People may be agitated; God is not. People may be upset; God is not. Put your trust in the One who is mighty to save!

PRAYER: Father God, help us! We are frightened by what we are seeing. But we know, Lord, that your love is reaching even now into all of these torn – up communities. Father, hep us to trust you and to act in love and compassion and not in fear. In the mighty and precious Name of King Jesus. Amen.

JUNE 6, 2020 ARE YOU A PERSON OF PEACE?

June 6, 2020

James 3: 13”Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness.”

How did the dove become a symbol of peace? The use of a dove and olive branch as a symbol of peace originated with the early Christians, who portrayed the act of baptism accompanied by a dove holding an olive branch in its beak and also used the image on their sepulchres. These believers adopted the dove because of the story of Noah sending out a dove to determine when the flood had ended. When the dove returned with an olive branch in its mouth, Noah knew that the land was becoming dry and that it was safe to leave the ark. Doves also have a reputation for being soft gentle birds who do not harm other birds. Sometimes pacifists are referred to as “doves.”

Being a person of peace is very difficult! In the last few days, we have witnessed scenes of young people attempting to clean up after rioters, only to be criticized or even to be attacked. These young people were people of peace attempting to repair the damage done by others. Many of the people who have died in the riots were people of peace who were attacked despite their innocent actions. The Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s succeeded precisely because most of the protestors remained peaceful, even after being beaten with clubs and thrown in jail. India gained its independence from Great Britain not through violence but through Mahatma Gandhi’s peaceful non – resistance campaigns.

In some cities in the U.S., violence has been avoided when people of peace came together with police for meals and prayer meetings. Those people saved their communities by their bravery. And at the same time, those courageous people “reaped the fruit of righteousness.”

Marching in protest marches has little value if it encourages others to become violent. In these days of videos instantly posted on YouTube, you have no control over the way your attempt at a peaceful demonstration might be misused. On the other hand, cleaning up a neighborhood demonstrates a willingness to go beyond the protests to truly bring healing.

Today, let us be people of peace. It’s difficult and potentially even dangerous. But in the end, it’s worth it.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5: 9 – 10

JUNE 5, 2020 ROTTEN FRUIT OR GOOD FRUIT? WHICH WILL IT BE?

June 5, 2020

WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!!

Matthew 7: 15 “Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.”

Have you ever had this experience? You buy some fruit – say, some apples – that look really lovely – all red and juicy. You can scarcely wait to get those apples home! You are already thinking about how good that apple will taste. And then, when you get the apples home, you bite into one and EWWWWWWWWW!!!!! Perhaps the apple has no taste; the flesh is juicy but there is no flavor. Or perhaps the apple looks great on the outside, but once you bite into it, you realize that it has already spoiled and all the flesh is brown and rotting. Or perhaps – even worse – you bite in and find a WORM waving at you! Of course, it would be even worse if you only found HALF a worm! At that point, you cut into the rest of the apples, only to find that all of the apples are just like this one. What a disappointment! What a waste of time and effort!

Sometimes we meet people who are just like that apple. They look really good; they sound really good. We are thrilled, thinking that we have made a friend for life…. and then, something happens. Some kind of a crisis comes, and suddenly our new best friend turns out to be a rotten apple.

While human beings can and will fail us repeatedly, God never fails. There are many ways that we can tell whether or not the Holy Spirit is moving in someone’s life. Galatians 5:22 – 23 describes the fruits of the Holy Spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Today, many of us are grieving over the violence that has overtaken America. In the midst of this violence, there are still people of peace. There are also people urging more violence, and some of these people seem very convincing. But the final test is this: what kind of fruit are you seeing? Are you seeing the fruits of the Spirit, or are you seeing the opposite?

Today, we have a choice. Will we be people of peace? Will we beg God for His Holy Spirit? The choice is ours.

PRAYER: Father God, this morning we beg you to send your Holy Spirit into our hearts! Lord, fill us with your Holy Spirit! Change us into the people you want us to be, people who truly show love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self – control. In the mighty and precious Name of King Jesus. Amen.

JUNE 4, 2020 GOD STILL WORKS MIRACLES!

June 4, 2020

JUNE4, 2020 GOD STILL WORKS MIRACLES!

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I inform you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord. 6 There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all men.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions them to each one as He determines.”

When I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in my bedroom in 1978, I had no idea what was going to happen! I was like a 7 year – old who had just been given the keys to a Ferrari! I knew virtually nothing about the Holy Spirit, even though I had read those verses in 1 Corinthians over many times.

The first thing that happened was that I suddenly developed an intense hunger for the Word of God. Even though I was a surgery resident on a very busy service, I found myself rushing home and grabbing my Bible and reading for hours. The second thing I noticed was that the Bible made sense in a way it never had before. Jesus had promised this to his disciples. “However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.” John 16:13 And the more I read the Bible, the more it came alive for me and the better I felt inside. But was there still more?

By this time, I had bought several books about the Holy Spirit and had learned that there were nine gifts of the Holy Spirit. Blessedly, nobody was around to tell me that I could only have one gift, so I just assumed that God had given me the entire package!

I had never prayed for individual patients to be healed before this, but I began praying for healing. I have told the story elsewhere, but one patient who was being sent home to die with incurable cancer was suffering tremendous pain. You could see the masses of tumor deforming her abdominal wall. When I prayed for this lady, neither of us hoped for anything apart from some pain relieve. Imagine my shock when, two years later, this patient returned for a relatively minor procedure, completely cancer – free! Since then I have prayed for thousands of patients in the course of my work, but very few miracles have been as dramatic as that one. Why did God choose to heal that particular lady? We won’t know until Eternity comes. And there were probably a number of others praying for her; I refuse to take credit for anything apart from anointing her with Alpha Keri Lotion and praying for her. But….God did heal her!

Some people want more of the Holy Spirit, but they are fearful about speaking in tongues. No problem. God meets people where they are. Perhaps your biggest need is for the gift of faith or the gift of discerning of spirits. The one thing on which you can rely is this: God is a good Father who gives good gifts and does not play charades with His children. Trust Him.

PRAYER: Father God, this morning we come to you, asking for your Holy Spirit. Lord, some of us are worried; we don’t want to open ourselves to anything demonic. Father, give the assurance to those who ask that you will give good gifts without interference from Satan. In the mighty and precious Name of King Jesus. Amen.

JUNE 3, 2020 “ARE YOU HUNGRY FOR CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE?”

June 3, 2020

John 16: 5 Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things. 7 But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate (Comforter) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.”

When I was growing up, I was raised in one of the quietest and least demonstrative denominations there was. Congregational singing was encouraged, but we didn’t clap our hands in church, we didn’t raise our hands in church, and sometimes it seemed as if we rarely even smiled in church! We were drowning in decorum. The problem was that when I read the book of Acts, it didn’t look anything like my home church. I was a bright inquisitive kid, the kind of kid that would ask embarrassing questions in Sunday School. And burning inside me was this question: does God really do miracles today? Nobody could answer me; looking back, some of my Sunday School teachers probably had the same question, but they couldn’t find an answer either. Part of our problem was our view of the Holy Spirit: we were taught that God gave the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to get the early church going, but after that, the Holy Spirit just kind of disappeared. Never mind that Jesus had promised that the Holy Spirit would be our Comforter and would stay with us always. Most of us probably imagined the Holy Spirit as some kind of gray fog that sort of oozed around. Not a particularly encouraging or inspiring concept!!!

I went away to a denominational college and lost my faith in a Christian Doctrines class. The professor was teaching that Jesus really didn’t do miracles, that those were just interesting myths. Of course, there were eye witness accounts, but could you really believe THOSE people? And so, my expectations about the power of God sank even lower. And that’s the way things stood until the spring of 1978 when everything changed in a few hours one Saturday night.

That Saturday had begun wretchedly! I was working a half day as a surgery resident, but looking forward to a special outing with friends that afternoon. Unfortunately, the friends canceled, leaving me at loose ends. Feeling disgusted and frustrated, I went to a local Christian bookstore and bought several books; if I couldn’t enjoy myself outdoors, I could at least indulge in an orgy of reading. What I failed to realize was that the Holy Spirit was nudging my arm so that all the books I selected involved true stories of people who took steps of faith and who then saw God moving mightily in their lives. I then went home and read steadily for about eight hours.

The last book I read was “Prison to Praise” by Merlin Carothers. Carothers was a Methodist U.S. Army chaplain who was ready to quit the ministry when he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and saw God begin to do miracles in his life. Carothers ended the book by explaining that one could pray and ask God for this gift. Feeling totally stupid but also desperate, I prayed a simple prayer: “God if you are really there, God if this guy is not lying, please do this for me!” The first time I prayed, nothing happened! Boy! Was I disappointed! But then I re- read Carothers’ description and realized that I should pay attention to any words that were forming in my mind. God was NOT going to pry my mouth open! I prayed again, and I could feel some syllables forming themselves in my mind. When I opened my mouth , a beautiful flowing language came out. I felt that I could have stopped at any point, but the longer I prayed in this language, the more joyful and peaceful I felt. And I felt CLEAN! It was as if God turned me inside out, scrubbed all the crud off, and turned me right side out again. That was the beginning of an adventure that has continued ever since.

Up until that time, I had never heard about the baptism of the Holy Spirit, nor did I know the term “charismatic.” I literally knew nothing about the Holy Spirit, but I was hungry to learn more. I later learned that there were many manifestations of the Holy Spirit, of which speaking in tongues was only one. While some charismatic denominations insist that one must speak in tongues to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, I have found that God doesn’t like being put in a box and that God will choose how to show Himself if we only give Him a chance. And the Holy Spirit does not force himself on anybody. When the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples at Pentecost, they were already praying together “in one accord,” in other words, their hearts and minds were prepared. And a prayer language is not always the first gift that God gives. Some people are afraid of speaking in tongues. That’s OK. God has other gifts He will give, and if you do not speak in tongues right away, that does NOT mean that God has not given you His Holy Spirit. God gives you what you need most. Perhaps you need discernment as your first gift. God knows your heart.

God will not disappoint you. Tomorrow we can study more about the Holy Spirit, but for today, let’s pray.

PRAYER; Father God, we thank you that you give good gifts to your children. Please send the Holy Spirit to all who read this. In the mighty and precious Name of Jesus. Amen.

JUNE 2, 2020 WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT BEGINS TO MOVE IN YOUR LIFE, WATCH OUT!

June 2, 2020

John 16:5 “Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things. 7 But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

8 And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.

12 I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it. 13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you. 15 Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you.”

The Day of Pentecost came, and the Holy Spirit descended in power. While Jesus was alive, he had already been teaching the disciples about the Holy Spirit; however, they really didn’t understand. It took the power of the Holy Spirit being demonstrated for the disciples to begin to understand the Holy Spirit. In these verses from the Gospel of John, Jesus is encouraging his disciples on the night in which he is about to be betrayed, beaten and hauled off to a kangaroo court.

Does God really work in people’s lives in a powerful way, or is this just a fairy tale?

YES! God is still working in miraculous ways in people’s lives! Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth if we would allow him to do so. In April 1978 I received the Holy Spirit into my life after praying and asking the Holy Spirit to come in. Nothing was ever the same again! Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth. One of the first things that happened was that I received joy – an ovewhelming supernatural joy that flooded my whole being with light and peace. God immediately began working in my heart, in my mind, and in my spirit, to show me new ways of thinking and believing. By the time I was 30 I had probably read the entire Bible through at least 20 or 30 times. But now I found myself rushing home and grabbing my Bible and reading for hours. I couldn’t get enough of God’s Word. And even though I had grown up in church and had memorized large portions of Scripture, it was as if I had an entirely new Bible. Things meant sense that had never meant sense before.

I began reading books about the Holy Spirit and learned that others had had similar experiences. For months it was as if a cloud of glory was enfolding me. While that experience gradually reduced, I found that I had a new closeness to God. That closeness has never gone away. I also found a new power in prayer, and I saw God do miracles in my life and in other people’s lives as well.

Are you hungry for more of God? Do you want to see the power of God working in your life? Ask God to send His Holy Spirit. The mark of the Holy Spirit is peace. Ask for that Holy Spirit peace and then expect God to move. God is a good Father and does not play games with His children.

PRAYER: Father, please send the Holy Spirit to everyone who reads these words. Come in your strength and your power. Bring your joy! Bring your peace! And bring your healing! In the mighty and precious Name of King Jesus. Amen.
