2 Peter : 3:1-9 “Beloved, this is now my second letter to you. Both of them are reminders to stir you to wholesome thinking by recalling what was foretold by the holy prophets and commanded by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
Most importantly, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. “Where is the promise of His coming?” they will ask. “Ever since our fathers fell asleep, everything continues as it has from the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately overlook the fact that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world of that time perished in the flood. And by that same word, the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. Beloved, do not let this one thing escape your notice: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.”
God is infinite – He’s infinitely good, infinitely kind, infinitely loving and infinitely patient. But He is also infinitely just. All actions have consequences, whether or not we believe it. We are already inhabiting eternity and making choices with eternal consequences.
Everything in nature has its own set of sequences. The seasons continue to come regularly. The sun rises and sets and rises again. And all of us are growing older, if not wiser, every day. But there is also an end to everything. Two days ago, on September 11th, we remembered all those who went to work that morning thinking that it would be an average day. Many of those people never came home again. Travelers on the planes that hit the Trade Center, the Pentagon, and that meadow in Pennsylvania had no inkling when they boarded those planes that they were going to their doom.
Here in Ghana, there is a saying “Nkwa hia,” “Life is precious.” Two weeks ago, we were horrified to learn that one of our long – time friends had died suddenly at the age of 66. (Both of us are older than that. Enough said.) None of us knows when he or she will die, or how we will die.
God has given each of us many chances to serve Him and to live for Him. But if we continue to reject Him or to scoff and laugh, one day we will die in our sins. The verse says that God WANTS everyone to come to repentance; however, we are creatures of free will and not puppets. God does not force Himself on anybody.
In C.S. Lewis’ book The Great Divorce, he writes “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God says, in the end, “Thy will be done.” All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. To those who knock, it is opened.”
If you are reading this today, you are alive and you still have the chance to choose to serve God and to tell Him, “Thy will be done.” Tomorrow is not guaranteed to any of us. Several thousand years ago, Joshua told the Children of Israel “Choose this day whom you will serve, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Today, what will you choose?
PRAYER: Father God, I pray that all those who read this will choose to serve you and to follow you! Let your Holy Spirit move in the hearts of all those who read this and bless them as they choose righteousness. In the mighty Name of King Jesus. Amen.
