1 John 2:1- 2 “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”
“Chuck Colson, of Prison Fellowship, tells about a prison in Sao Do Campos, Brazil, which is run according to Christian principles. The prison only has two people on its staff. The inmates do everything else. Each prisoner has another to whom he is accountable. Every prisoner goes to chapel or takes a course in character formation. Each prisoner is assigned to a volunteer family outside the prison that makes him a part of their family. The rate of return for crimes after release is 4% compared to 75% in other Brazilian prisons.
When Colson visited the prison to discover the secret of their success, a prisoner took him to what at one time was an isolation cell. When the door opened, Colson saw a beautifully carved wooden figure of Jesus hanging on the cross. The prisoner pointed to the figure of Jesus and whispered, “He’s doing time for all of us.”
Jesus made the sacrifice for you. He went alone to the solitary confinement of our cross and did our time—all of it. That means you are completely forgiven! That’s what makes Jesus different from everything else in the world! Only one religion gives us a Savior who has done it all for us. Only one religion offers complete forgiveness.”
There’s a Country Gospel song that says
“He paid a debt he did not owe,
I owed a debt I could not pay
I needed someone to wash my sins away
And now I sing a brand new song, “Amazing grace”
Christ Jesus paid the debt I could never pay.”

Jesus made an atoning sacrifice of himself when he willingly died on the cross at Calvary. He could have summoned legions of angels. He could have annihilated the Roman soldiers and the religious leaders. But he willingly laid down his life to make a perfect blood sacrifice for our sins.
Nobody else could have paid that price. None of us is good enough. All of us have sinned and have fallen short of God’s glory. Psalm 95:6 – 8 says “O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, the sheep under His care. Today, if you hear His voice, 8do not harden your hearts…”
A few days ago, I quoted the C. S. Lewis book, The Great Divorce. It is worth repeating the quote. “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God says, in the end, “Thy will be done.” All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. To those who knock, it is opened.”
Jesus wants to be our Advocate; however, we have a choice. If you are arrested and must go before a judge, you can choose to have a lawyer or you can choose to attempt to defend yourself. But even if you are a trained lawyer yourself, you are still better off having someone else defend you. The choice is yours: accept Jesus and allow Him to be your Advocate, or reject Him and try to defend yourself before God, the perfectly righteous Judge.
PRAYER: Father God, thank you for loving us so much that you sent Jesus to live and to die for our sins. Thank you that if we will confess our sins and accept what Jesus has done for us, He will be our Advocate. We gratefully accept what Jesus has done for us and we praise you for providing us a means of escape from eternal damnation for our sins. In the mighty Name of King Jesus. Amen.
