A Song of Praise to God Coming in Judgment
”Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless His name; proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples.
For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Honor and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.
Give to the Lord, O families of the peoples, give to the Lord glory and strength. Give to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come into His courts.
Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth. Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns; the world also is firmly established, it shall not be moved; He shall judge the peoples righteously.”
Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and all its fullness; let the field be joyful, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the woods will rejoice before the Lord. For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with His truth.”
”Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless His name; proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples.” Why should we sing new songs to the Lord? What’s wrong with tradtional hymns? Praising God is always good, but since God is always doing new things, why can’t we also find new ways and means of praising Him? The mother of one little boy was worried, for she knew her son really couldn’t sing very well and the school Christmas program was coming up. But the boy came home elated. “Mom!” he exclaimed as soon as he entered the house, “Guess what? I’ve been selected to clap and cheer!” Any act of kindness, any work done well and thoroughly, anything we do that encourages others-all these are acts of praise that proclaim God’s salvation.
“For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Honor and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.” Those who study the heavens continue to marvel at the beauty and complexity of the universe. If God created all this strength and beauty, it means He is even grander than His creation. We sometimes assume that the only things in God’s sanctuary are the fixtures we have installed, forgetting that God’s Holy Spirit can fill anyplace and sanctify it with strength and beauty. After all, on the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended on 120 people worshiping in a simple room in Jerusalem. There were no pews, no altars, no music, no light shows-only God’s glory.
“Give to the Lord, O families of the peoples, give to the Lord glory and strength. Give to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come into His courts.” How can we possibly give an Almighty God strength? We can serve God with everything that is in us, with all of our strength. While animal offerings were required for the ancient Israelites, the offering God wants most is our obedient hearts and our passion to serve Him.
“Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth. Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns; the world also is firmly established, it shall not be moved; He shall judge the peoples righteously.” There is nothing so beautiful as God’s righteousness and holiness. The closer we get to God, the more we learn of His holiness and the more we realize how sinful we really are. But how can we stand before God as a righteous judge? Only a blood sacrifice can wipe out sin, and Jesus Christ has given His blood as the ultimate sacrifice.
“Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and all its fullness; let the field be joyful, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the woods will rejoice before the Lord. For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with His truth.” When sin entered the world, God allowed the creation to come under the influence of sin; nevertheless, all creation rejoices in the presence of the Lord. Most of us have become so cut off from nature that we fail to sense the gladness that is there. The music of the spheres goes on continually.

APPLICATION: One of my favorite hymns has always been Cecil Francis Alexander’s “All Things Bright and Beautiful.” James Herriot, the Yorkshire veterinarian who penned a series of books about his experiences, borrowed lines from the first verse for the titles of his books. Chorus:
All things bright and beautiful
All creatures great and small
All things wise and wonderful
The Lord God made them all
Each little flower that opens
Each little bird that sings
He made their glowing colours
He made their tiny wings
The purple-headed mountain
The river running by
The sunset and the morning
That brightens up the sky
The cold wind in the winter
The pleasant summer sun
The ripe fruits in the garden
He made them every one.You might also
The tall trees in the greenwood
The meadows for our play
The rushes by the water
To gather every day
He gave us eyes to see them
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty
Who has made all things well
All things bright and beautiful
All creatures great and small
All things wise and wonderful
The Lord God made them all…
PRAYER: Father God, thank You for loving us and for caring for us. Lord, help us to praise You with everything we do throughout our days. In the mighty and precious Name of King Jesus. Amen.
