Warnings about the Adulteress
“My son, keep my words and treasure my commandments within you. Keep my commandments and live; guard my teachings as the apple (pupil) of your eye. Tie them to your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your kinsman, that they may keep you from the adulteress, from the stranger with seductive words.
For at the window of my house I looked through the lattice. I saw among the simple, I noticed among the youths, a young man lacking judgment, crossing the street near her corner, strolling down the road to her house, at twilight, as the day was fading into the dark of the night.
Then a woman came out to meet him, with the attire of a harlot and cunning of heart. She is loud and defiant; her feet do not remain at home. Now in the street, now in the squares, she lurks at every corner. She seizes him and kisses him; she brazenly says to him: “I have made my peace offerings; today I have paid my vows. So I came out to meet you; I sought you, and I have found you. I have decked my bed with coverings, with colored linen from Egypt. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, with aloes, and with cinnamon. Come, let us take our fill of love till morning. Let us delight in loving caresses! For my husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey. He took with him a bag of money and will not return until the moon is full.”
With her great persuasion she entices him; she lures him with her flattering lips. He follows her on impulse, like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer bounding into a trap, until an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare—not knowing it will cost him his life.

Now, my sons, listen to me, and attend to the words of my mouth. Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths. For she has brought many down to death; her slain are many in number. Her house is the road to Sheol, descending to the chambers of death.”
“My son, keep my words and treasure my commandments within you. Keep my commandments and live; guard my teachings as the apple (pupil) of your eye. Tie them to your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your kinsman, that they may keep you from the adulteress, from the stranger with seductive words.” In Biblical times, old men might marry several wives at the same time or sequentially, wearing out one wife after another. The lady described here is obviously the pampered wife of an elderly merchant who has traveled, giving her the chance to play around in his absence.
“For at the window of my house I looked through the lattice. I saw among the simple, I noticed among the youths, a young man lacking judgment, crossing the street near her corner, strolling down the road to her house, at twilight, as the day was fading into the dark of the night.” The writer is peering through a fine lattice that covers the windows of the house, cooling the air as it flows in by the Venturi effect, diffusing light and dust, and incidentally making it difficult for those on the street to realize that they are being observed. This foolish young man is making mistake #1; he is putting himself in the line of temptation by casually approaching this woman’s house at twilight. Doesn’t this guy have somewhere else to go at this time of day? Some family waiting for him? Perhaps a wife and children or parents and siblings? Whatever this guy has been doing earlier, by now he should be headed home, not anyplace else.
“Then a woman came out to meet him, with the attire of a harlot and cunning of heart. He took with him a bag of money and will not return until the moon is full.” Hoo-boy! This guy is in trouble now! Not only is this lady offering great sex, but she is also dangling the promise of a steak dinner from her peace offering meat. Sex and food-who can resist that combination? One must wonder what vows this woman can possibly have made that she has fulfilled them? Peace offerings are supposed to indicate peace with God, but which god is this woman serving? And the gross misuse of the meat from the peace offerings means that all the rituals this lady has performed this day are nothing more than an elaborate hoax. Good thing that God is not as easily deceived as this foolish young man!
“With her great persuasion she entices him; she lures him with her flattering lips. He follows her on impulse, like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer bounding into a trap, until an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare—not knowing it will cost him his life.” The key phrase here is “he follows her on IMPULSE. This guy has already made up his mind to sleep with the lady and is now allowing his testosterone to drive him. He may be fooling himself by succumbing to self-pity, telling himself that he works so hard, he deserves some relief. The only thing this guy has on his mind is all the delights this lady is promising.
Now, my sons, listen to me, and attend to the words of my mouth. Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths. For she has brought many down to death; her slain are many in number. Her house is the road to Sheol, descending to the chambers of death.” One of the most neglected facts that churches refuse to teach is that demons can be transferred during sexual intercourse. The woman in question has been sexually promiscuous, so she is operating under demonic influence. Who knows how many demons have transferred to her during her sexual forays? Now this stupid young man is about to have sex with her and all the demons motivating her can transfer to him. Up until now he has simply been responding to a demon of lust; however, he is about to take on a boatload of other demons.
APPPLICATION: The transfer of demons through sex is a very serious reality. One Christian speaker who was formerly involved in a coven has described the way the coven has recruited members by entrapping them with sex. We have an acquaintance who was a bright young man with a good future 30 years ago. But this fellow befriended a series of women from fetish families. The man has changed wives several times and there are numerous girlfriends in addition. Now this man has a vagabond spirit that prevents him from being able to focus on any subject for more than a few minutes at a time. Give this man instructions and five minutes later, he will be wandering off in another direction entirely. Our friend attends church, but he has never renounced sexual promiscuity, nor has he taken serious steps to free himself from demonic influence. We are watching as our friend’s personality continues to deteriorate, despite warnings from well-intentioned acquaintances and relatives.
How could the young man described in this chapter have protected himself? 1. He could have avoided temptation by staying away from this woman’s house. 2. He could have reminded himself of his obligations to his family. 3. He could have recognized a female sexual predator for what she was, rather than lying to himself. 4. He could have refused to delude himself by telling himself that he DESERVED some fun after all his hard work.
All we can say after all this is “Don’t follow this man’s example.” Although this chapter describes a young man, the temptations are just as real for young women and the advice remains the same: DON’T! Sexual temptations include viewing online pornography, visiting strip clubs, etc.
PRAYER: Father God, thank You for loving us and for caring for us. Lord, help us to follow hard after You and refuse to stray into areas where we know we will encounter temptation. In the mighty and precious Name of King Jesus. Amen.
